So wisdom teeth are required to be extracted when they’re causing damage to the adjacent teeth, causing infection or cysts and pain for the patients, requiring them to be removed so the patient can have a pain-free experience. There are times where a patient doesn’t need to have wisdom teeth extracted when they are fully developed in alignment with your teeth and not causing any issues. So there are always times where the wisdom teeth do need to be extracted if they are causing pain and damage to the adjacent teeth, causing some bone loss, decay to the adjacent tooth, or some pain and infection.
But through our advanced imaging at Gentle Smiles of Livonia, we look at all the necessary precautions to make sure that these teeth are moved effectively as possible and for you to have a smooth recovery. So wisdom teeth extractions, the best time to do them is between late teens to early 20s, and the reason for this is because root formation is not fully developed, which allows the teeth to be removed easier and it’s easier recovery for the patients. A dry socket is when a blood clot dislodges that causes intense pain for the patient and inaccurate healing of the site.
This can cause great discomfort for the patient, requiring them to come into the office for us to treat it and make sure that the patient is pain-free. So to avoid a dry socket when you have your wisdom teeth removed requires no forceful spitting or smoking, avoiding strenuous activity. We do offer all the post-op instructions possible and the medications possible to help prevent this from happening.
Now if that does happen, we do see the patient immediately to make sure that they are as comfortable as possible and to get them out of pain.
